OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!
Be a good friend, good daughter, good mom or good co-worker and remind those around you to have a Mammogram!
Most women have a baseline mammogram done at the age of 40, but based on family history and other personal circumstances (for example, a previous history of cancer) some women have their first mammogram much earlier. HOW TO HELP YOURSELF AND A FRIEND: Some women are really nervous about having a mammogram—organize a lunch with your friends and go together to your mammogram appointments!

BRAC Analysis is now available in our office to test for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. The test is a simple collection of saliva from the mouth onto a swab provided by Myriad, the company that developed the test. Before the test is run, Myriad will provide information to our patients regarding whether the test is covered by the patient’s insurance, whether there is a deductible and they also offer a payment plan for patients who are self-pay. It is an expensive test.

February 2009
This is Heart Healthy February—a time to reflect on the aspects of your weight, cholesterol and blood pressure that might put you at risk for a heart attack. Here are some tips on what you can do for yourself and your loved ones to improve your health and avoid having heart disease:
  • Signs of an impending heart attack in women are unusual fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, indigestion, shortness of breath. Less than 30% of women have chest pains.
  • How to identify a stroke: Can you smile? Can you stick out your tongue? Can you raise both hands above your head at the same time? Can you speak an entire sentence clearly?
  • Stop smoking.
  • Reduce salt intake. Do not salt foods already on your plate.
  • Lose some weight by following the food pyramid—lots of grains and fruits and veggie, a small portion of protein, fat and dairy and reduce sugar intake.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption.
  • Exercise. Walking every day is great for heart health.
  • Have your cholesterol checked.
  • Family history does matter, but you can change your own history.
  • Have your blood pressure checked.
